Timeline of planned communities [Source: INTI]

The International New Town Institute is developing a timeline locating planned communities across the world from 6000 BCE to the present. Melbourne appears in 1837, the year in which Robert Hoddle designed the Hoddle Grid. The interactive map allows visitors to track when and where planned communities have been established and if their global development has been sporadic or accelerated. This ongoing project forms one element of the institutes work which “focuses on the history and regeneration of Western New Towns, with a commitment to improving the planning of present day New Towns worldwide”.
